  + stars: | 2023-11-17 | by ( Lilit Marcus | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
For travelers who want to visit a smaller, more authentic local destination, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has released this year’s list of the best tourism villages. For 2023, 55 villages were recognized by the international organization, which focuses on sustainable tourism, up from 32 last year. The list includes small towns and villages from places as diverse as Mexico, China, Ethiopia, and Italy. There’s no ranking of the villages, and they are all listed in alphabetical order in English. Highlights in EuropeEurope’s selections to the UNWTO list represent a mix of cultural and environmental differences.

Elsewhere in the capital, artisanal gins are still just starting to catch on in the hottest bars. Even among the city’s social elite, many prefer to stick with the familiarity of a high-end pisco or an imported whiskey. Camila Aguirre Aburto works as a brand ambassador for Gin Provincia. Then she shows off the botanicals, like boldo, that give the gin flavor. “Close your eyes, smell the gin,” says Ms. Aguirre, who learned English by watching the “Scream” movies and speaking to friends.

DIVE IN Language programs abroad go beyond apps or even conventional classes by combining instruction with immersive experiences where the language is spoken. IN LIMA and I am in bed, half awake, mentally conjugating verbs in Spanish. Grammar hasn’t had such an insidious hold on my consciousness since high school, when my failure to learn French convinced me I was facing a monolingual future. And so I signed up for a week of classes at Peruwayna, a language school located in the bustling Miraflores district of Peru’s capital. The curriculum’s rigor attracted me—each day of the roughly $223-per-week “super-intensive” program would start with four hours of small group classes.

Millions of years ago, this desert in Peru was a gathering place for fantastical sea creatures: whales that walked, dolphins with walrus faces, sharks with teeth as large as a human face, red-feathered penguins, aquatic sloths. They reproduced in the gentle waters of a shallow lagoon buffered by hills that still wrap across the landscape today. Eventually, tectonic shifts lifted the land from the sea. Discoveries from the region have come at a brisk pace in recent decades, with at least 55 new species of marine vertebrates found so far. In August, paleontologists unveiled what may be the region’s most remarkable find yet: Perucetus colossus, a manatee-like whale now considered the heaviest animal known to have existed.

CNN —Reports of “earthquake lights,” like the ones seen in videos captured before Friday’s 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Morocco, go back centuries to ancient Greece. He has coauthored several scientific papers on earthquake lights, or EQL. To better understand earthquake lights, Derr and his colleagues gathered information on 65 American and European earthquakes associated with trustworthy reports of earthquake lights dating back to 1600. Other theories about what causes earthquake lights include static electricity produced by the fracturing of rock and radon emanation, among many others. At present there is no consensus among seismologists on the mechanism that causes earthquake lights, and scientists are still trying to unlock the mysteries of these outbursts.

It may have weighed twice as much as a blue whale because of its dense bones. That's nearly as heavy as a Boeing 747 or twice as much as a blue whale, which typically weighs between 72 and 180 tons. That means the other fossils retrieved from the area may not offer clues to how P. colossus lived. A 3D model shows what a complete skeleton of Perucetus colossus would look like, above a blue whale and smaller Cynthiacetus peruvianus skeletons. No limbs were found near the P. colossus skeleton, but fossilized evidence suggests it likely had both front and back legs.

“Everybody back up!” someone called to a crowd of people surrounding the model and actress Christie Brinkley, who was standing near a neatly trimmed lawn on a sunny and hot Saturday afternoon. Ms. Brinkley had just arrived at Polo Hamptons, an annual cocktail party and polo match held over two weekends in July on the sprawling, private Fishel estate in Bridgehampton, N.Y.“I’ve always gone to polo throughout my time out here because it is so East Coast,” said Ms. Brinkley, 69, as she sipped from a small bottle of rosé from Bellissima, her wine label, which people were also drinking nearby. “And there are usually some cute polo players.”The event on Saturday, which drew more than 900 people, was organized by Social Life magazine, a lifestyle publication based in the Hamptons that was celebrating its 20th anniversary. The afternoon attracted a crowd that included Jean Shafiroff, the philanthropist, Lizzie Asher, the president of Macchu Pisco, a spirits company, and Maria and Kenneth Fishel, who own the estate.

The |of Translation The undefined|of Translation The undefined|of Translation The undefined|of Translation See how a translator carries a book from one language to another, line by line. Much like a crossword, a translation isn’t finished until all the answers are present and correct, with each conditioning the others. Below are two attempts to show the thought processes involved in the kind of translation I do. Nobody would say “the truth, the truth, the truth” in English. Without it, the translation is faithful to the meaning of the Spanish clause, but it feels stale, spiritless, not faithful to the voice.
